Lonely Planet
A giant in the guidebook publishing industry, Lonely Planet has been writing up some of the best travel content around for the past 50 years — and I’ve been proud to become one of their most recent contributors.
In 2023, Lonely Planet reached out to me in the hopes that I’d work with them on their completely new and improved Oahu, Hawaii guidebook. They were making a shift to work with local travel writers whenever possible, and I fit the bill perfectly. One other fantastic writer was brought onto the project, and the two of us created a guidebook that provided informative insights, while also bringing light to native Hawaiian culture, small businesses, and sustainable voluntourism opportunities.
Before I new it, that one guidebook had turned into Lonely Planet digital work and half a dozen other in-print guidebooks. Right after completing the Oahu project, I started on guidebook content for the neighboring islands of Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii. Not long after, I positioned myself as an expert on the Orlando theme park scene, allowing me to work on my first “Pocket” (or small-scale) Lonely Planet guidebook, as well as the larger Florida guidebook.
Most recently, I’ve worked on the Seattle Pocket guidebook and the Seattle chapter of the greater Pacific Northwest guidebook.
My Lonely Planet Author Contributions
“Sarah was a pleasure and boon to work with. I gave her a very big project, and she worked to understand all the intricacies until she truly was a master of the work. She returned clean, thoughtful, joy-invoking content and I can't wait to see it in print. I truly appreciate Sarah and her careful attention to detail, deep industry knowledge and fantastic attitude. ”
